PROJECT 1051

At the core of this project is the creative meeting of the French HipHop group La Caution and...

// Date: September 11 & 12 and October 26 & 28, 2010
// Venues: Sophiensaele and Maria am Ostbahnhof, Berlin

Since its opening in February 1999, the cultural centre Batofar in Paris considered the European dimension of its agenda one of its biggest priorities. The activities of Batofar imagine new forms of international citizenship in an everyday practise.

With the focus on Paris and Berlin, the initiative PROJECT 1051 – A European Creation Of Hip Hop Music And Visual Arts, realised in collaboration with DISK/CTM and Sophiensaele, brings together Parisian musicians La Caution and Berlin video artists Transforma to create a multidisciplinary work of art, which wants to raise questions about European identity and the City as a concept.

Refering to the amount of road kilometers between the two cities, the project is called 'Project 1051'. The collective work of La Caution/Transforma is conceived, created and presented both in Paris and Berlin between June and October 2010. This process goes along with a series of actions addressing the local audiences such as artistic workshops, club nights and meetings.

CTM & UNSOUND PRESENT LUSTMORD

This October, legendary industrial sound artist Lustmord will perform live on stage for the second...

This October, Legendary sound artist Lustmord will play live for the second time in almost three decades. He will appear at the 2010 edition of the Unsound Festival in Krakow and, supported by Brooklyn based artist Oneothrix Point Never, at Berghain in Berlin.

Brian Williams, the man behind Lustmord, began working under that name in 1980, and since then his dark sound sculptures have been highly influential not only in music genres such as ambient and industrial, but also in film and games.

Oppressive and frightening, richly textured and painstakingly produced, Lustmord’s music has also made use of field recordings from locations such as caves, crypts and slaughterhouses. His first self-titled album "Lustmord" was released in 1981 and was produced in collaboration with Peter Christopherson and John Balance of Coil and Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions. Since, he has released 13 more albums under the name Lustmord, and for many 1990's "Heresy" stands as Lustmord’s key work, acknowledged as having given birth to the "dark ambient" genre.

He has collaborated with the likes of Tool, The Melvins, Chris & Cosey (Throbbing Gristle), SPK (he actually was a member for some time), Greame Revell, Coil, Paul Haslinger (Tangerine Dream), Robert Rich, Clock DVA, Current 93 and Nurse with Wound amongst others. He is also a member of Puscifer, the music project of Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle. He has done remixes for Tool, Jarboe (Swans), Venetian Snares, Lori Carson, Mortiis, Isis, Puscifer and Nadja. He has also worked for many years as a music sound designer in Hollywood,with credits on over 40 movies such as "The Crow" and "Underworld", as well as computer games (FarCry: Instincts, Unreal Tournament III, Assassins Creed etc.).

Lustmord's latest full album release Other was released through Hydrahead in 2008. His first live concert in 25 years took place in June 2006 as part of a service to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Church of Satan (released as Rising on Vaultworks). Now he will come to Europe for two exclusive concerts:

Italian prog legends Goblin are to play Unsound Festival 2010, with Italo Disco hero and original...

Italian legends Goblin are to play Unsound 2010, with original members Claudio Simonetti, Massimo Morante, Maurizio Guarini plus Bruno Previtali and Titta Tani of Demonia included in the lineup.
Goblin are best known for the creation of unique and influential soundtracks to classic horror films by Italian director Dario Argento. These include 1975’s "Profondo Rosso" ("Deep Red") and 1977’s "Suspiria", remarkable for its experimental sounds and creepy vocals. Goblin also scored George A. Romero’s "Dawn of the Dead".
Although Goblin reformed in 2009 to play five shows, this current line up marks the first time co-founder Claudio Simonetti has performed with the band live in many years. The show will include visuals from Dario Argento movies, to be re-mixed live by a Norwegian visual artist soon to be announced.

DISK / CTM has been invited to contribute to the concert program of ISEA2010 RUHR, the International Symposium on Electronic Art and one of the most important festivals for digital and electronic art.

For the Konzerthaus Dortmund on August 26th, our pick is Mudboy, who will perform a specially composed piece on the organ in collaboration with Petter Schuette. The second concert of the evening will be a solo performance of the exceptional guitarist Fennesz.

Following his fantastic organ-concert in Berlin's French Cathedral during CTM.10, we invited Charlemagne Palestine for a solo concert on the Seifert organ of the St. Maximilian Church in Duisburg-Ruhrort on Saturday August 28th.

And of course we will be also visiting ISEA personally between August 26th and 28th. So if you want to meet-up, don't hesitate to get in touch.

MUDBOY /w PETER SCHUETTE, FENNESZ

Date: August 26, 20:30
// Venue: Konzerthaus Dortmund

Mudboy, the "doctor of organology" as he calls himself, creates music from all kinds of everyday noises and sounds. Field recordings of croaks and the twitting of birds are as much part of his repertoire as narrative performances and surround sound. The organ offers him further experimental ground. An expanded and modified church organ became his hallmark. Mudboy places emphasis on repetition and turns his audience with elements of noise, drone and psychedelica into a state of trance. In a sense, calling himself a doctor thus relates not only to his musical experiments. In Dortmund he will, together with collaborator Peter Schuette, perform a newly composed piece, which he wrote especially for the organ of the Konzerthaus Dortmund.

Mudboy released innumerous albums under as multitudinous labels, including the highly acclaimed This is Folk Music (Last Visible Dog, 2005) and Hungry Ghosts (Not Not Fun/Digitalis 2007). This year he released the album Impossible Duets: Collaborations Across the Void (Hundebiss records), assigning the duet its very special place within electronic music.

Peter Schuette is an american keyboardist who plays with a.o. Silk Flowers, Soiled Mattress and the Springs, or USA is a Monster.

> www.mudboymusic.com
> www.myspace.com/silkflowersnyc

The evening will proceed with Fennesz. The composer who wanders between the worlds of club culture and New Music is known for his compelling musical quality and abstract sound design. His typical reverberating guitar sound is interwoven with expansive electronic sound layers, which creates a very characteristic kind of music. The captivating electronic compositions go far beyond sterile computer arrangements and fascinate even sceptics of experimental electronic music. His long musical pieces are highly dynamic and full of suspense. Fennesz searches for the beauty of noise and dissonant elegance. For the concert at ISEA – like on his recent album Black Sea (Touch Music) – a whole range of instruments will be brought into action: acoustic and electric guitars, synthesizers and other electronic devices, and a computer.

Fennesz releases on Touch Music. After Venice (2004, Touch Music) his latest
record Black Sea was released in 2009. Over time he worked with
Keith Rowe, Sparklehorse, David Sylvian, Ryoichi Sakamoto and many other artists and was a member of the trio Fenn O'Berg with Peter Rehberg and Jim O'Rourke.

> www.fennesz.com

CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE

// Date: August 28
// Venue: St. Maximilian Church in Duisburg-Ruhrort

Charlemagne Palestine creates intense, ritualistic music, which he refers to as 'resonant music', in contrast to the 'minimal music' of his peers, Phillip Glass, Michael Nyman, Terry Riley and Steve Reich. With his piano and organ works, he has developed a highly individual aesthetic centred around layered overtones, and electronic drones, which build and change gradually, gently harmonising. His performances are overtly spiritual in nature. Palestine's pieces consist of stratifications marked by an absence of linear progression by an transcendent timelessness. What we hear seems to be an excerpt from a continuum that may well ring for eternity, an infinitely extended present that makes past and future fade away.

> charlemagnepalestine.org

ISEA2010 RUHR

16th International Symposium on Electronic Art, visits the borderland of electronic and electro-acoustic music. On three evenings from 23 to
27 August 2010 the Konzerthaus Dortmund will turn into a site of musical
experiments. During ISEA2010 RUHR artists of several generations will present
their recent compositions: Apart from Mudboy and Fennesz, the program presents concerst by the pioneer of electronic music Éliane Radigue, the Japanese avant-gardist Keiichiro Shibuya, and the subtle cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir.

ISEA, International Symposium on Electronic Art, has been held at different cities worldwide since 1988: 2009, the venue was Belfast, 2008 the ISEA was being held in Singapure. Being one of the projects of RUHR.2010 European Capital of Culture, the symposium will be for the first time in Germany this year! Apart from the ISEA2010 RUHR Concerts, a comprehensive conference program with more than one hundred speakers, keynotes, two exhibitions, the E-Culture Fair, performances, club as well as partner events with the Academy for Media Art Cologne, the Folkwang University, Essen, and the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl form part of ISEA2010 RUHR.

> isea2010ruhr.org

TRANSMEDIALE OPEN WEB AWARD 2011

transmediale in collaboration with Mozilla have announced the creation of the new Open Web Award...

transmediale in collaboration with Mozilla have announced the creation of the new Open Web Award 2011 a special third platform for creative excellence alongside the transmediale Award 2011 and the Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2011.

The transmediale Open Web Award is a new platform for radical, creative and innovative art works and projects that:
- are on the web and about the web
- use open and free technology
- incite participation and/or collaboration

They can be critical, celebratory or both. Projects should have the potential to demonstrate and/or objectively critique the potential of open web issues, and those employing the creative use of HTML5 and other developing 'open' technologies will be given specific consideration. The point is to play with both the idea and materiality of the (open) web in ways that spark new thinking and practice.

The winner(s) of the Open Web Award 2011 will receive a total prize of 5000 EUR, and be given the opportunity to have 'supported' status on Drumbeat (http://drumbeat.org). Beyond the specific Open Web Award criteria, the same rules, conditions and application procedure apply as the transmediale Award 2011.
