Talk about unpredictable. For the last couple of years, clubbers drowning in Minimal have been desperately scanning the horizons, waiting impatiently for a new sound to turn up and save them. Yet when it actually came, this "new thing" was a revival of a very old thing indeed: Deep House, which had first set sail from Chicago in the mid-eighties, was suddenly back. In Berlin, labels such as Sonar Kollektiv and Compost were suddenly hip again; veteran producers such as Dixon signed to bellwether labels like Get Physical, Innervisions showcased at Sonar, and devout minimalists were buying up Dennis Ferrer records on – gulp – Defected.
Of course, to true believers, the genre had never really gone away. Dance music of the 4/4 variety has always swung between House and Techno, but we’d headed so far out towards Minimal, when the House underground was embraced again, the change seemed sudden. Clubbers were grooving to real instruments, soulful vocals and long sequences of building Chicago stabs, and Larry Heard – one of the originators of the genre, hell, even the originator – was right at the centre of the revival. His sweet vocal cut "The Sun Can’t Compare" became a club hit comparable in size to his 1986 classic "Can You Feel It?". Naturally, Heard is one of the true believers. His approach to production and DJing – emphasizing warm pads, live jazz keys and, to put it bluntly, sex – hasn’t wavered over twenty years.
In a special event put together with online dance magazine Resident Advisor, CTM is proud to present a club night, which celebrates this resurgence of Deep House, bringing the legendary instigator of the genre together with the best of the new guard in 2007.
Fittingly, rest of the lineup is distinctly German. Joining Heard will be rising star Efdemin from Hamburg label Dial Records, recently voted RA’s producer of 2007. Efdemin is a killer DJ with an ear for records that sound both classic and new. And we’re proud to have two live p.a’s: Panoramabar resident Prosumer, partner Murat Tepeli and diva Elif Bicer will be mixing up records, gear and live vocals in classic house style in support of their much anticipated debut album Serenity (Ostgut-Ton). Then there is live house music from Zürich maverick Kalabrese. Wedding hardware, brass instruments and live percussion, Kalabrese and his Rumpelorchester represent a freak folk take on the house template, the groove just as likely to be from sampled cutlery as 808s. Rounding out the bill are sets from local support da.lia and Sanch & Fabian Lamar. Expect golden grooves all round, and House music all night long.
